About Mandol
Mandol lies in Nuristan's west, a district of pine forest and deep gorges drained by the Alingar river. Its villages perch above the water, with the forest rising steeply behind them.
The Alingar gathers its headwater streams here, commonly named as the Ramgel and the Kulem. The district's timber and its rivers define daily life: houses are built from the surrounding cedar and pine, and paths follow the gorge walls between settlements.
Mandol also carries a quiet weight in the province's story. Gadmuk, in this district, served as the first capital when a smaller Nuristan province was carved out in the 1980s, and development surveys from the early 2010s recorded most of Nuristan's rug-weaving villages here.
Mandol sees few visitors, which is precisely its appeal: unhurried valleys, working villages and deep forest country.
