The District

About Nurgaram

Nurgaram is the province's doorstep from the Laghman side. Lower and warmer than the high districts, it is where Nuristan meets the plains, and for travellers arriving that way it is the first Nuristani ground underfoot.

Known locally as Nechegram, the district took its present shape when Nuristan's map was redrawn in 2004, and it is the most populous of the eight districts. The land is fertile and the valleys open, draining to the Alingar river; farming does well here, and the district's position on the way into the province has long made it a place of coming and going.

From Nurgaram the roads climb towards the forests and high valleys of the interior, which makes it a natural first stage on any journey deeper into Nuristan.
